He temporarily worked for the Caltex oil firm in Kenya, then for Kenya and East African Railways before entering politics at the age of 19 on October 18, 1952. As the youth representative for KADU, a political organization that, together with KANU, went to Lancaster House for the talks that led to Kenya’s independence, he was the youngest member of the Kenyan delegation at the age of 28.
He was also involved in the creation of Kenya’s first constitution.
He and Jaramogi Oginga Odinga co-founded the Forum for the Restoration of Democracy. Odinga finally formed the Ford-Kenya party, while Shikuku Ford Asili teamed up with Kenneth Matiba.
